The big problem with the Man of Steel sequel is that they're using a Batman comic as the main storyline, effectively killing the dignity of the main character. If the studios really wanted to show the two biggest superheroes fighting, why not use the fight scene from Red Son?
In Red Son Batman was a shadowy figure who wanted to bring down Superman because he saw him a threat to humanity. Batman also didn't engage Superman in a fistfight as he was smart enough to know that he wouldn't survive, instead relying on strategy to bring Superman down. The Superman in Man of Steel is closer to the Red Son version than the government stoolie that Frank Miller made him. The Red Son Batman also had the right kind of motivation to be an antagonist that would team up with Lex Luthor, which I can only assume is going to happen in the sequel.
If Batman isn't going to team up with Lex, then why not make the story similar to the World's Finest 3-parter from the animated series? Batman and Superman weren't quite friends in that one but after working together they eventually warmed up to each other.
