The Dark Knight Trilogy Epilogue: Harley Quinn by kinjamin The Dark Knight Trilogy Epilogue: Harley Quinn by kinjamin
Just in time for Halloween!

With a Nolanized Harley Quinn I wanted to do a couple things:

- To keep as much of her original design as possible. I'm not sure what drives people to redesign her. Don't get me wrong - I dig her look in Arkham City. But there's something very pure and elegant about her O.G. Bruce Timm look. (Note I just said Arkham City. The Arkham Asylum look is bearable. The New 52 look is horrid.) Plus in TDK they kept the Joker's outfit pretty much intact, so I figured this would be a nice parallel. It's not exact, of course (circus tights might be a stretch) - but I kept the major shapes and where the reds and blacks go.

- Make her outfit something you can feasibly buy at any goth store. I guarantee you can go to Melrose or the Haight and buy something far more outlandish then what I've presented here. In her origin from the animated series, she literally goes to a store and grabs all the necessary pieces for her costume in one swoop.

- Kind of predictable, but I did give her half of a cut smile. But I wanted her to be more surgical about it so I had her use a scalpel (Which is what she's holding in this image. Those aren't butter knives.)

The idea came to me because in Nolan's world, Batman's sorta sidekick took over the job. So why not Joker's sorta sidekick also do the same?

I can't take any credit for the story beats here. It's really a mish-mash of Paul Dini's Mad Love, The Dark Knight Returns (Joker's state of mind) and a bit of David Mack's Kabuki: Metamorphosis (which is an excellent read, btw)

Anyway, hope you guys like it. Initially I was going to do Barbara Gordon next but with Oct. 31st coming up and some requests for a villain, I figured it would be a good time to break the monotony of Bat heroes.

In the near future ill do an Ivy piece so I can touch up on their partnership (wanted to do it here but didn't have enough room)

By the way, I really hated putting the 'kinjamin.deviantart.com' link on the bottom left. I'm not a fan of watermarks or artist stamps. I feel like they offset the whole piece. But I've seen my stuff on various parts of the web without quoting me as a source and it's getting me really annoyed.

That's an interesting idea. The Joker twists Harley's mind without doing a thing. You could debate whether he consciously manipulated her, whether her own unstable mind caused her plunge into insanity, or both. And I love the art. Clap

If you're asking if there's characters I'd like to in Epilogue style, I'd do all of them if I had a good design and idea that wasn't too derivative of what already exists. Had a good idea for Ventriloquist, if I can find the time to do it.

I've been admiring your work ever since you did "Epilogues" for the Nolanized Bat-characters. Would there have been other characters in the Nolanized Bat-verse you'd like to work on as well? Keep it up!

I really love your art work! It's amazing! Your harley quinn design is just beautiful! As are all your others. I would really like to see a Riddler story done by you, I think your story ideas are epic so I think you could do him really well!
Keep up the great work! :D :)

When Batman quit/retired the Joker checked himself into a adult behavior center, and went into a catatonic state, it wasn't until Batman returned that he went back to his old way, this of course was seen in the dark knight returns. But I'm sure that during the 8 year absence of batman in the Nolan movies he (batman) made a couple of vigilante stops without being seen by the feds so it's possible for be joker and Harley to have has escapades, if Kinjamim can mold that Into his Nolan verse batman it could build for interesting stories, I mean of he can fuse, Bruce Timms, Nolan's & Frank Millers batman into 1 it would be the best sh!t ever! & maybe. Grant morrisons lol.

I really like this one. I especially love the contrast between the first 2 panels. If I may give an analysis, I think that the state of the room in those 2 panels reflect Harley's state of mind.
Just out of sheer curiosity, how much time elapses between those panels?

That's pretty much on point. The time between the panels is an entire "therapy" session where it's Harley thats losing it since Joker isn't responding to anything. I was thinking this happens way more than a few times. And she eventually becomes undone.

One therapy session? You mean the room went from panel 1 to panel 2 in an hour?
By the way, I know it says in the TDKR novelization that the Joker was in Arkham, but since they never mentioned him in the movie, I decided to come up with my own theory as to what happened to him (more like wishful thinking): My theory is that the SWAT team that showed up after Batman left to deal with Harvey, opened fire on the Joker.

This is an amazing idea and the way you can just put it into one comic book page and have a real understanding of her character is super cool! I positively love the idea of the Joker going into some kind of catatonic state after finding out that the Batman is dead, after all Batman "completes him". I also feel, and maybe it's just me, that he would hate Bane. He would hate the man who destroyed his idea of a perfect rival, or like companion in crazy, kind of... I'm not really putting it into words right. But, seriously, love this, love the idea, love that I can just read one comic book page and be so interested in the story behind it, and really wanting to find out more.

I agree completely about Joker vs. Bane.. if I can get it in, I actually wanted to do a one page comic where Bane tries to recruit Joker while he's in Arkham. Instead, Joker kills two of Bane's men.. so Bane keeps Joker locked in.

Yes, I saw that, it was so great! I especially loved the Batman signal above the toilet. I don't want to know what he used to draw it there, because it didn't look like blood. Yuck. Haha. I think I commented on that page too! :-)

This is absolutely magnificent. I love the way you show affection and details (like on the television). I have a few suggestions if you don't mind, like what about :
Riddler ( He was mentioned twice in the dark Knight)
The same with killer croc in tdkr
Technically he was in a nolanized bat-film,Batman Gotham Knight
Basically I'm saying is that why not do people who either had Easter eggs or appered in the animated film?
Here's the list of people who we're mentioned but not in the live action film that I'm hoping you could do:
Riddler
Killer Croc
Deadshot
Mr Freeze
Red Hood(Jason Todd)
Poison Ivy

Really like this! Harley's costume look's great! I picked up on the references to Mad Love and Dark Knight Returns but it's clever how you've woven them into a new backstory. I have to also say that for some reason I am in love with panel 4! I don't know why, obviously its fantastically drawn but more than that, something just clicks. Only minor quibble is I would have liked the Joker to have looked a little more like the late Heath Ledger in first two panels as you've captured his likeness well in bottom panel. But meh. Also, do you mind me aksing who you used as reference/inspiration for Harley's likeness?

Haha sure... it actually started off as Mila Kunis... (Those are Mila's big eyes) but there was something off about it when I exaggerated her smile. So I started tweaking it so it looked more like Kristen Bell.

Wow, now I can totally see the Mila Kunis in her eyes, especially in panel 4 (I do have a bit of a thing for her, so maybe that's why that panel is special for me?)! I have also just noticed that the News Report has the name, Ryder... ;)

What I like most about this, oddly enough, is just HOW insane she is. I get the feeling the "Joker's instructing her!" is more of an insane delusion than reality. But then, she wouldn't be Harley if she didn't see things in the Joker that don't exist.
